Student society Théâtrallemand Vôtre ! on tour in Germany

The student society “Théâtrallemand Vôtre ! - Théâtre allemand en Sorbonne” is going on tour in several German universities to perform their play.

Accompanied by Gilles Darras, lecturer at the Department of Germanic and Nordic studies and the creator and artistic director of the student society, the troupe of “Théâtrallemand Vôtre ! - Théâtre allemand en Sorbonne” is leaving for Germany on June 26, 2023.

The tour will take place in the German universities of Heidelberg, Bonn and Göttingen until July 2, 2023, where students will perform “Don Juan Comes Back From The War”, a play that was first performed on June 5, 2023, during the Sorbonne en Scène festival. This excursion abroad was made possible thanks to the support of the Franco-German University, an organisation promoting Franco-German cooperation in higher education and research, in the context of a call for project proposals to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty, which was celebrated on January 22, 2023, at the Sorbonne by the German and French heads of government and of State.

“Théâtrallemand Vôtre ! - Théâtre allemand en Sorbonne” is a student society that organises German drama workshops. Attached to the Department of Germanic and Nordic studies, the society provides material and financial support to any drama project in German, and performs one or several plays at the end of each year.

About the play

Poster of the play "Don Juan Comes Back From The War" by the “Théâtrallemand Vôtre ! - Théâtre allemand en Sorbonne” troupe.

The “Théâtrallemand Vôtre ! - Théâtre allemand en Sorbonne" troupe performs the play "Don Juan Comes Back From The War" (“Don Juan kommt aus dem Krieg") written by Ödön von Horváth in 1936. The play is an adaptation of the myth of Don Juan, set in the context of the First World War.

Summary

Don Juan has lost his splendour. At the end of the war in 1918, he is tired and makes his way through a crisis-ridden Germany, looking for his betrothed, who he abandoned long ago. She is dead. He does not know it. And every woman he meets is like a facet of this lost ideal. When Don Juan comes back from the war, it is not only his country, Germany, that needs rebuilding. He himself, just like all the ones who fought in the war, is a broken man attempting to return to a normal life in a context of economic and moral crisis. But he meets with his own perversions, his need to seduce, and the love he will never experience again.

Welcome to Sorbonne University's Faculty of Science & Engineering

A unique combination of courses and expertise

Our international study programmes are organised according to the major disciplinary areas of the faculty. They represent the graduate study programmes that are not strictly conducted in French or that could be suitable (in part) for non French-speaking students. They also reflect part of the diversity of the disciplines involved and the bi- and inter-disciplinary aspects of many of the courses we offer.

Research & Innovation

We rely on disciplinary skills and on interdisciplinary approaches to renew concepts, methods and research subjects and to focus on some of the crucial issues faced by our societies: transformations affecting the very construction of knowledge (data, AI), the treatment of complex objects (the environment, marine and ocean sciences, cultural heritage) or our contributions to addressing societal challenges (climate change, healthcare).
